Tags!

The (undocumented) Tags extension - arguably the most important flarum extension - is driving me crazy. I want something like this:

Food:

Bread
Fruit

Drink

water

What flarum claims about Tags categories is simply untrue. There are evidently 3 - not 2 - categories: primary, sub-primary & secondary. I can create “sub-primary” tags and by dragging them every which way I can and, by accident, get it into a “child” position - but only by knocking one or more of the “parent” tags out of position. After dragging tags for 10 minutes I gave up.

Tried this using both a Chrome-based & Firefox-based browser.

Know any tricks?

Update: Ok, I managed to create and correctly position the “child” sub-primary tags I needed. The only browser that would do this is Tor running on my Win 7 laptop! No browser on my Win 10 desktop machine would do it.

Next issue: the new child tags are hidden until I click on the parent tag - creating confusion the 1st time people use it and an annoying extra step after they learn where their target tag (folder) is located. Any way to fix this?

I have the Move tag enabled. When I click on the 3-dot icon at the right end of the selected post there is no option to move a post. There IS an entry to “select tag” which only copies the post to a different tag - not what I want. Is there another setting that i’m missing?

I am able to reorder the tags pretty consistently (on Firefox). If it’s not behaving as you expected, I recommend creating a post at https://discuss.flarum.org, as I unfortunately can’t reproduce this (and even if I could, I still can’t fix it anyways as I do not maintain the Tags extension, nor any other Flarum extension - sorry).

I tried to create a custom CSS for it that would always show them, but I can’t because the tag list is handled by JS and is dynamic (so, the tags can’t just be “made visible”, because they exist only after you click the primary tag). Therefore once again, I recommend posting feedback regarding this at https://discuss.flarum.org instead - I think it will require changing the code of the Tags extension itself, as a simple CSS fix won’t do.

If you want to always display the tags, you could make them regular (non-nested) primary tags (at the cost of losing the hierarchy). AFAIK, there is functionally (in terms of permissions, etc.) no difference between a nested primary tag and a regular primary tag, but I might be wrong. Basically, you can choose between having a (visual) hierarchy or having them visible all the time, at least for the time being.

I assume that’s SychO’s “Move post” extension? Either way, I believe this is for another discussion (even better, a post in the extension’s discussion). Anyways, I checked this regardless and it seems that after you have the post selected, the actual option to move the post(s) is not in the three-dot menu of the selected post. Instead, a new button “Move Posts” should appear in the right sidebar, in discussion controls. E. g.:

If I understand you correctly the screenshot you displayed is from the right sidebar. I have nothing at all on my right sidebar. None of those 3 UI elements appear. Should I be seeing “Reply” & “Follow” at this point?

Ok these elements do show up when viewing the actual post - but not when looking at the folder (“Tag”) - Is that the normal setup?

Ok I finally got a reply from SychO about his Move option not showing up in the 3-dot menu to the right of each post. He said:

“Then it’s either a cache/install issue or your permission settings are preventing you if you’re trying to use as non-admin”

Since i’m admin and I didn’t actually “install” Flarum here i’m at a loss as to how to proceed.

laffin_boy I just setup a temp admin account at your forum, and it works for me. First, I mark the posts that I want to move:

…then, a “Move Posts” button is added to the right sidebar:

Clicking it will bring up a new menu where I can select the discussion to move the posts into:

etc.

Perhaps you could send a screenshot of how the actual dropdown menu looks like for you, and also the discussion controls (in the right sidebar) after you select a post to move, please?

laffin_boy open the discussion and select an actual post inside the discussion. Post ≠ discussion, what you are trying to select is the entire discussion (I believe there’s another extension for that purpose, “Move Posts” moves individual posts only)

Ok, I (finally) get it. I’m sorry for the effort it took to get to this point but, really, this is one more example in an endless chain of examples of why 99% of all software is poorly understood by the human beings who try to use it - because it’s never documented!

This is not a FreeFlarum problem nor a Flarum problem - it’s a universal software problem. It’s fun for developers to write cool apps but writing a fully documented Help file is hard work & boring - so the universal response is to pretend that the program is self evident. SychO, unlike most extension developers, actually wrote quite a bit in his README about the potential subtleties of moving posts. But did he mention how to use the extension or even where to find the interface? Of course not! It was too blindingly obvious (to him).

Which is why 99% of all software needs a geek > human being translation.

I, on Chrome, have no problems at all using tags.
