I tried to access my forum a few minutes ago, but I noticed the message, “An error occurred while trying to load the full version of this site. Please try refreshing this page to fix the error.”

Of course, I tried reloading the page and using incognito mode, but the screen remains the same. What caught my attention this time is that the control panel is only partially accessible:

I was wondering if anyone else was facing the same problem or looking for a solution.

According to the post that esymeo shared with me, in the comment above, there was an administrative announcement a few hours ago that said:

Sorry for the downtime today! It was caused by a handful of forums going well beyond the resource usage allowed under our Fair Use Policy.

If this affects you: please understand that FreeFlarum is a free service, and it can’t guarantee specific uptime or performance levels. It’s genuinely amazing to see what people have built here - forums with thousands of users and active discussions - and it’s a real testament to how accessible Flarum is as a discussion platform. But there’s a limit to what a free service can sustain, and some forums have hit that limit as of now. So, I’ll be emailing the admins of these sites directly to figure out next steps.

With that said, all forums should be back up, but let me know if you spot anything out of the ordinary (e-mail is better: info(at)freeflarum.com). I am a bit busy lately with other duties, so please bear with me while I sort this out🙏

empiresshadow I thought mine had come back for good but they seem to have gone down again now, hopefully it gets sorted, I’ve had enough of building sites I’m building one for my auntie at the moment and it’s a bit of a ball ache I’ve got to be honest ✨

I believe you can download a backup copy of your forum through the main control panel.

You will find the download options under the “Account Settings” page, specifically in the “Export Your Data” section:

Since there are a number of forum users who are facing the problem and do not know what is going on, I will try to write a post that includes an explanation of the platform’s latest announcement.

Polls Yeah for sure. I only use the one and its very low traffic so I’m very surprised I was effected after reading the official site talking about high traffic forums being impacted. Ours only gets used and visited a few times a week, if that.

medelinor Yes, thank you, but this is what I tried already, and I have received errors attempting this since my site went down. If I click the “download data” button I am sent to a white screen that says:

"{“success”:false,“errors”:[“Server error while creating backup.”],“data”:null}"

And if I try to use any of the export to CSV options I am sent to a white screen that says:

“Internal Server Error”

So, that’s not very encouraging, but I’m hoping its temporary.

I also noticed a change in the response status a while ago. A few hours ago, the website was accessible but unusable; just now, I found that there was a server error returning code 500.

I hope it will be temporary as well.

This is truly unfortunate, but according to the announcement, it’s likely temporary. However, there’s no guarantee the free service will continue.

medelinor That is also what happened to me, I first had the message “An error occurred while trying to load the full version of this site. Please try refreshing this page to fix the error.” at the head, and I could see my categories as an unformatted list but there was nothing in them. Then, it progressed into a white page with the code 500 only.

All that said, I did email Kevin (info@freeflarum.com) as the announcement suggested, and he was able to restore my forum. Good luck to everyone else, hopefully just temporary downtime like for me.
